- Kathryn is originally from Buffalo NY, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Speech Language Pathology from Buffalo State College. After graduating, Kathryn went on to receive her master degree in Deaf Education from Canisius College. Throughout under grad and her master program, Kathryn worked at St. Mary’s School for the Deaf playing many roles there. She worked in the after school recreation program, residential, and most recently began substitute teaching. Kathryn is very excited to start this new journey 1900 miles from home, and her first job as a teacher.

- Alison Devey is thrilled to be joining the staff at Sound Beginnings as a teacher of the Deaf in the Birth-to-Three program. Prior to Sound Beginnings, Alison was a Teacher of the Deaf for Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and Blind. There she taught a diversified group of deaf and hard-of-hearing students ranging from preschool up to grade five. Prior to her work with ASDB, Alison was the Toddler Classroom teacher at Desert Voices Oral Learning Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Alison has a great passion for teaching deaf children how to speak and listen. Her daughter Makenzie was born deaf and through the experiences they had on their journey to spoken language, Alison knew that her calling in life was to help other families and their children as they began their path to spoken language. She received her Master’s degree in Deaf Education from the University of Arizona. She is married to her high school sweetheart and along with Makenzie they also have an eleven-year-old son named Skyler. She has quite a bit of family here in Utah and is very happy to have escaped the 120 degree summer temperatures of Arizona.

- Lindee Dorsey is an Assistant Teacher at Sound Beginnings. She graduated cum laude from Utah State University with a degree in Family, Consumer, and Human Development, with dual emphases in Human Development and Family and Community Services. Lindee and her husband Corey live in Logan with their baby boy, Kyson, and a whole bunch of furry babies. Lindee absolutely loves her time at Sound Beginnings and can’t wait to begin her third year here!

- Marge Edwards recently received her Masters degree in Communication Disorders and Deaf Education at Utah State University. As part of her Masters degree, she received specialized training in auditory learning and spoken language as part of the Graduate Studies Program in Auditory Learning and Spoken Language at USU. Her interest in Communication Disorders and Auditory Learning began when she had two sons with hearing loss. In the course of her graduate studies, she had the opportunity to participate in a clinical externship at the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children in Sydney, Australia. Marge is very excited to be working with the amazing children and families at Sound Beginnings and to help every child reach their potential.

- Nicole is a Speech Language Pathologist and a classroom teacher for Sound Beginnings. She received a Bachelor’s Degree at Brigham Young University in Special Education with a minor in music. She also received her second Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees at Utah State University in Speech Language Pathology. Nicole has been involved in the Sound Beginnings Program as a graduate student in the past and is now excited to be on the faculty. She looks forward to collaborating with others in research efforts to ensure that best teaching practices are utilized in her classroom and are shared with other professionals. Prior to her experiences at USU, Nicole worked in the public school system as a special education resource teacher and a speech language pathology assistant. With four creative daughters, her home is always the scene for adventure, and her family enjoys an active lifestyle.

- Lisa is a Speech Language Pathologist for our birth to three and preschool programs. She also is a Clinical Instructor for the Auditory Learning and Spoken Language Graduate Students. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees at Idaho State University. Prior to joining the staff at Utah State and Sound Beginnings, she maintained a private practice in Idaho providing individual therapy services and contracting with the local school district and Up to 3 program. She has worked with a wide range of communication delays and disorders with an emphasis in both children and adults with hearing loss. Lisa and her husband Brett have 2 handsome boys and a beautiful daughter. She enjoys spending time with her family, blogging, digital scrapbooking, gardening, and playing the piano.

- Brandi Neilsen is a Speech-Language Pathologist for the Sound Beginnings Preschool Program. She has a deep passion for her profession--especially work with young children. She received her Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Utah State University with an emphasis in Auditory Learning and Spoken Language. Brandi spent two years as an SLP in the elementary program of Cache County School District. As a graduate student, she was heavily involved in the pilot year of the Sound Beginnings Program and is very excited to have returned as a member of the staff. Brandi and her husband Tim are raising two energetic children in Smithfield. She enjoys gardening, running, reading, and spending time with her family.

- Marie Rood is an Assistant Teacher in the Sound Beginnings program. She studied at Ricks College, and at Utah State University. In 2009 Marie and her husband moved to Logan, Utah from Coos Bay, Oregon where she had worked for 14 years as a Paraprofessional at a K-4 elementary school. Marie worked in Resource Room, Title 1, and Federal Indian Education programs. In 2002 she earned her Oregon Paraprofessional Certification, and in 2010 she became a Certified Dental Assistant, and began working on a Child Development Associate. Marie and her husband Kevin have two adult sons, Sean and Cody, who are both in college. She enjoys reading, knitting, traveling, family time, and taking her dog Stella for walks. Marie is very excited to be working with the wonderful children at Sound Beginnings.

- Jeanette Smoot is originally from Brigham City, UT. In 2009, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Communicative Disorders and recently completed her Masters of Speech Language Pathology, as well as the Graduate Studies Program in Auditory Learning at Utah State University. Jeanette loves the children and families she has associated with at Sound Beginnings and she is excited to continue working with the birth to three and preschool programs. This summer, she joined Janet Fuller, Lauri Nelson and three other recent graduates of the program in Vietnam. They supported The Global Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss, which provides training and supplies to audiologists, teachers and parents of children with hearing loss in developing countries. In her spare time, Jeanette enjoys music, movies, and spending time with her 14 nieces and nephews.

- Kara Sorensen is a Teacher’s Aide at Sound Beginnings. She graduated from Utah State University in 2010 with a degree in Social Work. She recently got married and moved back to Logan where her husband is attending school at Utah State. She has always loved working with kids and is so excited to be able to work in the Sound Beginnings Preschool.

- Prior to working at Sound Beginnings Charlotte has had an array of experiences working with families and children with hearing loss. She has been a preschool teacher for the majority of her career, however, has also worked in an early intervention setting. Charlotte began her career at Desert Voices Oral Learning Center and is very excited to be returning to a school that focuses primarily on the spoken language development of children with hearing loss. Charlotte earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Deaf Education at Kent State University and recently completed her Masters of Education with a focus in Literacy from New England College. Charlotte will be moving to Logan with her husband, Allan, and their Maine Coon Cat/sidekick, Baxter.

- Stacy is the Program Coordinator at Sound Beginnings Preschool. Originally from Northern Michigan, Stacy got her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Education at Eastern Michigan University and earned her teaching certificates in Special Education Hearing Impaired and Elementary Education. After graduating, Stacy became a deaf educator at Carle Auditory Oral School (formerly St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf at Carle) in Urbana, IL. Throughout her eight years at Carle Auditory Oral School, Stacy taught toddler groups, preschool, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten. In addition, she mentored practicum students from area universities and took on several teacher leadership responsibilities in the school. These experiences led to Stacy pursuing her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration at Eastern Illinois University. Stacy is excited to work at Sound Beginnings and continue to help children with hearing impairments reach their communicative and academic potential. Stacy moved to Logan with her husband, Dan, and daughter, Amanda.
